A Western tale can live and die by the likeability (or unlikeability) of its protagonist, and the Red Dead series is no different in this respect. John Marston learned from Arthur and the rest of the Van der Linde gang, and he goes on to surpass Arthur Morgan. I know he was coerced into becoming the bounty hunter he was in the previous game by kidnapping his family but that also defined his character. While RDR II is already shaping up to be a divisive game due to its abundance of systems, realism quirks, and bleak tone, I count myself among those floored by the game’s achievements. With that said, I love John Marston ALMOST as much, but Arthur does end up leaving a deeper impact, though as mentioned, this is mostly because RDR2 is just overall narratively a better game. We find out that Morgan was once in love with a woman named Mary but his life as an outlaw and her family’s prejudice caused their romance to fall apart.
